Noriaki Hyuga was a member of the Hyuga Clan, son of Jaotu Hyuga and Rei Hyuga, and brother of Sayuri Hyuga. When his uncle, Shogun Masamori Hyuga, fell ill and the morale of Yamatian troops was falling as the Grand Alliance grew stronger during the Great War, Jaotu and Distreyd Thanadar XII cast an elaborate illusion spell on Noriaki which made Noriaki look like the Shogun.

Noriaki impersonated the Shogun during the Struan Rebellion and rallied Yamatian forces in Maar Sul City in 1004 AE in order to stop the advance of the Grand Alliance. Everyone was fooled by this act, including officers like Samachi Nomura, and they thought that the invincible Shogun himself had come to personally crush the Alliance. This strengthened the Yamatians' resolve and made them deadlier than ever.

Noriaki and Kagetsu II had a fierce and even duel during the First Battle of Maar Sul, but Kagetsu eventually won when he used the skills that he drew from the memories of the spirit of swordmaster Despard Silverbranch who dwelled within him. When Noriaki died, Distreyd's illusion spell wore off, and the Alliance and the Yamatians realized that Noriaki had been a mere Shogun Impostor.
