Leon Palaiologos is a shaman and the fraternal twin brother of Daniel Palaiologos; both hail from Valencia in the Fourth Age. Debuting as adventurers just after the Moonstorm, Leon and Daniel scored a major victory in rescuing Hector Redgrave, son of the Duke of Solinas, Valencia, from a kidnapping attempt before moving on to new exploits in the village of Petyrhurst just above Valencia's northern frontier.
Biography[]
Early Years[]
Leon and his fraternal twin brother, Daniel Palaiologos, were born in Solinas in Valencia to Alentian refugees who nevertheless proved themselves loyal and deserving of legal citizenship--it helped that both were mages of considerable power. Leon and Daniel were inseperable since youth, with Leon acting as a brake on his fraternal twin brother's overconfidence.
Finding his aptitude as a shaman early in life, when he began talking to the spirits of the dead, Leon formed a close bond with the spirit of Deuel the Elder, his dead Uncle. After learning the story of said Uncle's death from his father, Deuel the Younger, Leon resolved that just as his brother Daniel swore to return hate with love, he himself would hate back, so as to stop what happened to his Uncle from happening to others.
When his brother revealed his dream of creating a New Alent to him, Leon was the one who pointed out that a society that discriminates against talented people just because their talent wasn't magic was a bad thing, and got Daniel to moderate his aspirations accordingly.
Struggles in Valencia[]
While in Solinas, Daniel and Leon learned of the disappearance of Duke Alexei Redgrave's youngest son, Hector Redgrave, after the Moonstorm which had damaged several locations throughout Valencia with mysterious moonstones. Deciding to help find the missing Hector, the brothers began looking for clues for the young lord's whereabouts. Leon used his shamanic training to attract the spirit of the recently departed Sinlarine elder Faolain Mairin during a Sinlarine funeral march and learned that a boy fitting Hector's description had used the chaos in the aftermath of the Moonstorm to sneak out of the city.
The brothers found evidence that Hector may have entered the nearby forest and soon found two sets of tracks: ones belonging to an adult, and another to a youth. They came across Takeo, a member of the Holy Inquisition of Cardia, who initially suspected them of being brigdands. After a brief clash, the brothers managed to convince Takeo that they were looking for Hector to bring him back home, and Takeo decided to follow along although he remained suspicious of the pair.
With guidance from a ghost squirrel which Leon had communicated with, the trio eventually located Hector experimenting with a large moonstone shard which had landed in the forest. Hector's magic ended up affecting the shard, opening a widening rift to an unknown, alien location. An armored figure stepped out from the cover of the trees to order Hector to stop the experiments, and the brothers decided to intervene as they were suspicious of his stranger's sudden appearance.
When the stranger invoked the name of a Red Queen who was anxious to meet with Hector, the brothers realized that the stranger was not working for King Derek Hawthorne of Valencia but some other monarch, and they told the stranger to stand down. The stranger became furious and introduced himself as Bauk Yuriev, knight of the Red Legion, and threatened the brothers to back down or he would kill them on the spot. The brothers became even more determined to protect Hector, and a clash ensued.
While Daniel shielded Hector from being snatched by Bauk's dire wolf partner Varg, Leon and Takeo faced the red knight himself. Eventually, however, Bauk hurled a fireball at him and Daniel and Leon gave the latter his reserves of Mana in order to give him the power to launch a stream of water to blast the fireball back and turn it into steam. Leon stayed unconscious for a short while after that, getting up and taking Bauk's Sinlarine Dagger before returning to the forest trail which led back to Solinas, where he then interrogated Bauk's spirit.
Bauk's ghost revealed that Hector was somehow the cause of the magical storm which cased moonstones to fall all over the world, and lied that the boy was at risk from Valencia's own Inquisition. He tried to get Leon and Daniel to take Hector to his people, but Leon and Daniel refused, saying that they were ready to lie to protect Hector by any means necessary. Bauk mocked them and put a blood mark on Leon in order to push his Clan to take vengeance for him, but then lost his defiance when the Grim Reaper came for his soul. Leon, angry and feeling justified in his next actions, refused to listen to Bauk's pleas to save his ghost and tossed him to the Grim Reaper before coming back to Valencia with his brother, Hector, and Takeo.
Interlude: Returning the Dagger[]
Upon returning home and receiving the reward, Daniel and Leon went to a candy store to buy, well, candy. There, they were contacted by one Marie, who had an errand from a Sinlarine named Kernaghan who claimed the dagger Leon had taken from Bauk as his tribe and culture's heritage. Leon returned the dagger to Kernaghan freely, not seeing anything suspicious about the man and happy to return the dagger to its 'rightful owners'.
On to Petyrhurst[]
Meeting Oskana[]
In order to seek more cash for their project to start a 'New Alent', Daniel and Leon went off to do a trading mission to the frontier zone above Valencia, a trading mission which also doubled as a quest to find (more) magical anomalies or relics which can be exploited. After entering the nearby tavern, Leon met up with a 'fur trader', Oskana, who was skeptical of the concept of a 'New Alent', but seeing something in Leon, recruited him to a mission in the woods just outside the village, a mission to find a potential source of power which a Dwarf crime syndicate was looking for as well.
Leon managed to get Oskana through a patrol of Dwarves using Shamanic Magic to manifest the souls of nearby dead animals and use them as distractions, then at the fur trader's suggestion, helped lure one of the Dwarves guarding an ancient ruin nearby to a lone glen, where Leon then committed his first cold-blooded murder by stabbing him at the back of the neck. Then he went back to the ruin to aid Oskana, even though he had an inkling that not only was she similar to Bauk, but she did not have his best interests at heart.
His next move was to try to manifest a nearby dead animal once more to distract the remaining Dwarf guarding the ruin. When that failed, he threw his spear at the guard and dashed into the ruins, but not after the former dodged the spear and began chasing after him. He then found a hall which led to two passages, one which led to a den of a giant spider, and another which led to darkness. The first contained a presumed victim who nevertheless tried to siphon Leon's powers when the latter tried to connect his soul to the other person's, forcing Leon to run back to the hall and then the second passage.
Within the Ruins[]
There, he found Oskana, who had stepped on what seemed to be a pressure panel, and despite his suspicions, the boy searched for a loose rock to put on the panel and thus allow Oskana to walk freely. Even hearing Daniel and Kernaghan (who had partnered together to find him)'s voices just behind him did not stop him from finding a large-enough stone and putting it on the pressure panel, allowing Oskana to start the next phase of her search.
Leon and her found a puzzle, a puzzle which led towards a pedestal containing a small chest wrapped in webbing. Leon failed said puzzle, causing Oskana to curse him as the ruins collapsed, but not before he took the small webbed chest, hoping that he had at least salvaged something.
The Main Event[]
Meeting up with Daniel, his new ally Kernaghan, and a mysterious Dwarf (who turned out to be the Giant Spider's victim) just outside the ruins, the ad-hoc party found themselves confronted by Oskana, who turned out to be Bauk's sister, and Jaws, a member of the new Dwarven Triad, who had come with twenty well-armed criminals. Both argued with each other, but also made demands of Leon, who in response, howled his defiance at them and opened the chest, trying to use the relic inside to overcome his enemies.
The relic, which was the Magic Bar of Soap, actually did its job, ravaging the Triad reinforcements and saving the group, but not before Oskana revealed herself to be Bauk's sister, Oskana Yurieva, and declared eternal vengeance on Leon for Bauk's death. In response, Leon shouted that Bauk had been trying to kill them and abduct one of their friends, and duplicated Bauk's curse on him and cast it at Oskana.
Temporary Safety[]
They managed to escape back to Petyrhurst, where Kernagahan managed to place the twins inside a healer's tent, where they were able to catch up with each other's business and even plan for the capture of Florian Gagnon, the Hound of Etheril.
Aliases and Nicknames[]
- Leon, LenLen, Leo the Lion.
Appearance[]
Leon prefers similar clothes to his brother, choosing linen and cotton clothes covered in leather, and his face, while soft as well, carries a near-constant expression of skepticism. He is fold of darker colors, greens and browns and occasionally black, but knows that that last part is impractical in the summer heat.
Personality and Traits[]
Skeptical, cynical, and more rational, yet at the same time, able to care for his brother deeply and wants to keep him safe from the consequences of the latter's dreams. However, he also has a self-righteous, theatrical, and vindictive streak, which showed when he condemned Bauk's soul to the Grim Reaper. Later on, he also shows a tendency to make morally dubious decisions, such as killing a potential enemy (a Dwarf belonging to a criminal syndicate) in cold blood.
Powers and Abilities[]
He wields a spear and can communicate with the dead moderately well--whenever the dead allow him to speak with them. He is also attempting to learn to make the spirits of dead animals to attack his opposition although he still has ways to go before earning the dead's respect.
As of the Petyrhurst Arc, Leon has attempted to duplicate Bauk's curse on him and cast it on the latter's sister, Oskana.
Relationships[]
Hector Redgrave[]
Leon wants Hector to return safely and is willing to go to any lengths to ensure Hector's survival. Near the end of their adventure, he and Daniel succeeded in establishing a rapport with Hector and the latter has grown to like them.
Daniel Palaiologos[]
Daniel and Leon are close as fraternal twins. While they have chosen different professions and may argue at times, they respect one another and know how to work as a team. Leon believes that Daniel is the more foolish of the two, but is blind to the fact that Daniel knows he thinks that.
Takeo[]
Leon is worried about Takeo's outbursts of violence. Although the brothers and the paladin are getting along for the time being, there is constant worry that they will end up fighting again if Takeo grows suspicious of their motives.
'Oskana'[]
In his latest adventure (on the Discord RP), Leon accepted an offer to work together with a 'fur trader' named Oskana, whom he suspects to have a connection to Bauk due to perceived similarities with the latter. However, he does not know that she has a mysterious agenda which may or may not be compatible with Leon's.
Oskana reveals herself to be Bauk's sister, Oskana Yurieva, and both her and Leon have declared each other to be archenemies, with Leon cursing her with a variant of the curse Bauk had cast on him.
