Daniel Palaiologos is a Red Mage and the fraternal twin brother of Leon Palaiologos, who hail from Valencia in the Fourth Age. Nursing ambitions to found their own 'New Alent', the two boys found themselves going on adventures which put them in great personal danger in their quest, as well as slowly experiencing the darker side of life in the Land of the Living.

Biography[]

Early Years[]

Daniel and his fraternal twin brother, Leon Palaiologos, were born in Solinas in Valencia to Alentian refugees who nevertheless proved themselves loyal and deserving of legal citizenship--it helped that both were mages of considerable power. As he grew up, Daniel could not stick to one specialty, but dabbled in as many as he could, eventually becoming a full-fledged Red Mage at fourteen.

As Daniel grew concious of his great talents, he slowly gained a creeping ambition which more than matched them--the ambition to build a new Alentia, somewhere in the world. A new Alentia dedicated to the empowerment of humanity, not just those with Magical Power, where the fruits of said power will be given to all to use as their tools to uplift themselves. And so, he went adventuring with his brother.

Struggles in Valencia[]

While in Solinas, Daniel and Leon learned of the disappearance of Duke Alexei Redgrave's youngest son, Hector Redgrave, after the Moonstorm which had damaged several locations throughout Valencia with mysterious moonstones. Deciding to help find the missing Hector, the brothers began looking for clues for the young lord's whereabouts. Leon used his shamanic training to attract the spirit of the recently departed Sinlarine elder Faolain Mairin during a Sinlarine funeral march and learned that a boy fitting Hector's description had used the chaos in the aftermath of the Moonstorm to sneak out of the city.

The brothers found evidence that Hector may have entered the nearby forest and soon found two sets of tracks: ones belonging to an adult, and another to a youth. They came across Takeo, a member of the Holy Inquisition of Cardia, who initially suspected them of being brigdands. After a brief clash, the brothers managed to convince Takeo that they were looking for Hector to bring him back home, and Takeo decided to follow along although he remained suspicious of the pair.

With guidance from a ghost squirrel which Leon had communicated with, the trio eventually located Hector experimenting with a large moonstone shard which had landed in the forest. Hector's magic ended up affecting the shard, opening a widening rift to an unknown, alien location. An armored figure stepped out from the cover of the trees to order Hector to stop the experiments, and the brothers decided to intervene as they were suspicious of his stranger's sudden appearance.

When the stranger invoked the name of a Red Queen who was anxious to meet with Hector, the brothers realized that the stranger was not working for King Derek Hawthorne of Valencia but some other monarch, and they told the stranger to stand down. The stranger became furious and introduced himself as Bauk Yuriev, knight of the Red Legion, and threatened the brothers to back down or he would kill them on the spot. The brothers became even more determined to protect Hector, and a clash ensued.

While Leon and Takeo faced Bauk, Daniel tried to drag Hector to safety while telling the young lord to stop with the experiments once the rift began widening into a portal. Hector protested being touched by a stranger and told Daniel that the experiment was under control although he soon realized that the moonstone was expanding the portal on its own without his influence. Letting go of Hector, Daniel guarded the young lord who attemped to close the portal, but the pair were soon targeted by Bauk's dire wolf partner Varg. A brawl ensued during which Daniel cast several spells in succession to harm the dire wolf which kept dodging his attacks.

Eventually, Daniel began running out of Mana, which put him in peril when Bauk launched a fireball from his sword, but he and Leon combined their energies to conjure a torrent of water which saved their lives, albeit causing Leon to fall unconscious. With the help of Takeo, however, as well as the unexpected opening of a portal to Yamatia, which allowed a mysterious being called Tetrarch to interfere and kill Bauk, allowing the group to rescue Hector and eventually bring the boy back to Solinas, with Daniel looting Bauk's corpse of his enchanted sword.

Interlude: Returning the Dagger[]

Upon returning home and receiving the reward, Daniel and Leon went to a candy store to buy, well, candy. There, they were contacted by one Marie, who had an errand from a Sinlarine named Kernaghan who claimed a dagger Leon had in his possession as his tribe and culture's possession. Leon returned the dagger to Kernaghan freely.

On to Petyrhurst[]

Arrival[]

As part of a plan to earn money to further his dreams of New Alent, as well as seek out more abnormal magical phenomena, Daniel and Leon went to the frontier zone north of Valencia, where they planned to sell soap and tools in the small village of Petyrhurst. With Takeo and Marie insisting on accompanying them, the four then made it to the village's tavern, where they sought buyers for their wares as well as opportunities to earn coin and also prospect for sources of raw wealth.

Daniel wound up walking outside the tavern with Marie, where Maralise, a demon with a special connection to the latter, attacked the both of them and tried to mind-control her. Daniel managed to fight Maralise off, but ended up saying harsh words to Marie to snap her out of the mind control, causing the latter, heartbroken, to jump into a pond. This suicide prompted Daniel to to Takeo and grieve, with the both of them having gone to the house of an old woman who told them about an entity named 'Mr. Spider' whom the other villagers sacrificed travelers to.

A Fateful Missive[]

Later that day, he received a message from Hector Redgrave, his young friend, through a messenger bird which revealed potential treason from Hector's father, the Duke of Solinas. Placing his trust in Hector's words, Daniel went to look for Kernaghan and requested his help as a favor in exchange for having returned the Sinlarine Dagger to him back in Solinas. Then after Kernaghan assigned Farah to look for news of Alexei's contact in Petyrhurst, Daniel went with Kernaghan to look for Leon in the nearby woods, where they found a dead Dwarf which Leon had killed and was being gnawed on by Plague Rats, which then attacked them.

After killing the plague rats, Daniel and Kernaghan then managed to make their way to the ruins where Leon had gone into, and Daniel managed to talk the remaining guard (a hostile Dwarf belonging to the Triads) into letting them inside on the presumption that if what was inside those ruins was so bad, to let them risk their lives inside them and thus not have to lift a finger to deal with the threat.

Upon entering, the two found that Leon had awakened an unknown psychic threat, a threat which was inflicting spiritual pain on Kernaghan. Daniel, in response, decided to clean up his brother's 'mess' before rescuing said brother himself, knowing full well that he'd do the same for him. This resulted in them encountering a giant spider and its unknown victim, and Daniel entering combat with the former, holding his own despite his exhaustion.

The Ruins Collapse[]

Daniel and Kernaghan found a mysterious dwarf trapped in webbing and freed him, although Daniel was almost unconscious due to reaching final victory against the giant spider but at the cost of his enchanted sword. This meant that he had to be carried out by the Mysterious Dwarf.

The Main Event[]

Meeting up with Leon just outside the ruins, Daniel and his ad-hoc party found themselves confronted by Oskana, who turned out to be Bauk's sister, and Jaws, a member of the new Dwarven Triad, who had come with twenty well-armed criminals. Both argued with each other, but also made demands of Leon, who in response, howled his defiance at them and opened the chest, trying to use the relic inside to overcome his enemies.

The relic, which was the Magic Bar of Soap, actually did its job, ravaging the Triad reinforcements and saving the group, but not before Oskana revealed herself to be Bauk's sister, Oskana Yurieva, and declared eternal vengeance on Leon for Bauk's death. In response, Leon shouted that Bauk had been trying to kill them and abduct one of their friends, and duplicated Bauk's curse on him and cast it at Oskana.

Temporary Safety[]

They managed to escape back to Petyrhurst, where Kernagahan managed to place the twins inside a healer's tent, where they were able to catch up with each other's business and even plan for the capture of Florian Gagnon, the Hound of Etheril.

Aliases and Nicknames[]

Daniel
DanDan

Appearance[]

Daniel prefers to dress in light, form-fitting clothing covered in leather armor. His brown hair is smooth and clean, and his face is soft, showing his naivete. He would later switch to a Red Mage's white-and-red costume after getting his first reward from the Duke of Solinas for rescuing Hector.

Personality and Traits[]

Daniel started out as outgoing, enthusiastic, and cheery, yet also immensely confident to the point of recklessness. However, the peril and danger of his first adventure, as well as the initial failures in his second adventure (letting Marie die) and being trusted by Hector with a vital mission have lightened the boy's naivete without diminishing his resolve, which is now focused on his loyalty and friendship with Hector Redgrave and to a lesser and expanding extent, Kernaghan Finian. He has also revealed that he was aware all along that his brother, Leon, thought of him as naïve and in need of safeguarding, but didn't see the need to make that an issue.

Powers and Abilities[]

He wields a crossbow and can cast basic Black Magic spells such as fireballs, lightning bolts, and spikes of ice, as well as White Magic healing, enhancement, and shielding spells. He has also acquired an enchanted sword from his now-dead first foe, Bauk Yuriev, which he uses as his main weapon.

Relationships[]

Hector Redgrave[]

Daniel is protective of Hector, wanting him to survive through the mess he has created. Hector is apprehensive of Daniel, not sure what to think of this stranger who tries to dictate what he can and cannot do. Nevertheless, the three bonded together near the end of their adventure, and Hector ended up hero-worshipping the twins later on, believing wholeheartedly in their quest to found a New Alent.

Eventually, as of the latest updates on the Discord RP, Hector would trust Daniel with the details of a potential conspiracy in Valencia, and Daniel would repay that trust by trying to investigate this potential conspiracy and stating that he did not want to disappoint Hector.

Leon Palaiologos[]

Daniel and Leon are close as fraternal twins. While they have chosen different professions and may argue at times, they respect one another and know how to work as a team. While Leon thinks he knows Daniel better than the latter knows himself, Daniel has observed his brother as closely as the latter has him, and knows full well that Leon has his own flaws, namely a tendency to go for morally dubious solutions to problems.

Takeo[]

Daniel is worried about Takeo's outbursts of violence. Although the brothers and the paladin are getting along for the time being, there is constant worry that they will end up fighting again if Takeo grows suspicious of their motives. However, Daniel and Takeo grew closer in future updates of the Discord RP, especially after the death of Marie, an unfortunate hanger-on who tried to attach herself to the Palaiologoi twins and eventually ended up killing herself, causing Daniel much grief.

Kernaghan Finian[]

Daniel and Leon first met Kernaghan when the two gave him the Sinlarine dagger both had acquired during their battle with Bauk. Then Daniel met up with him again in Petyrhurst after Marie's suicide, after which Kernaghan gave the boy a measure of consolation. Ironically, Daniel has had more interactions with Kernaghan than Leon, even though Leon and Kernaghan are both Shaman. After receiving the enchanted letter from Hector Redgrave, Daniel has turned to Kernaghan for help and found himself growing loyal to the Sinlarine shaman as well.

Trivia[]

Daniel is modeled after David Garcia Martinez from the Webcomic/Webtoon Lalin's Curse, and his player was allowed to use the picture as long as the creator, Isaky, was given credit.
