Benjen Coldhands is a former paladin of Graves Hall who, along with nine others of his order, joined the Clergy of Nergal after the fall of their god Cardia in the Cataclysm. He and his fellow paladins accompanied the former Magestar mages Raum and Vepar to the Temple of Hephaestus on Falgorn in order to ensure that the captive Shogun Hiroshi Takamoto and the Fellowship of Shipwreck Cove would play their parts in the Battle of Hephaisteion.
